We are thrilled to report that our partner, Mary Johnston Hospital (MJH), was just awarded an $83,000 grant from the United Methodist Women (UMW). Working with Mr. Isagani Arceo, Chairman of the Board at MJH, and Dr. Evangelina Duran, Medical Director at MJH, Rev. Mark Lancaster, CIOO of E-Health Records International, Inc. (EHRI), helped draft the successful grant application.
MJH is a 107-year-old Methodist hospital located in the heart of Tondo, Manila. They are nationally recognized for their work serving the needs of their community. This 120-bed hospital has many of the capabilities of a modern hospital, but like most hospitals serving impoverished populations, their needs, and the needs of their community, far outweigh their means.
To strengthen their outreach work, MJH “adopted” one of the most indigent neighborhoods (Barangay 123) in Manila. Barangay 123’s population is roughly 10,000, of which 58 percent of the children are malnourished; 52 percent of the children suffer from a respiratory disease (e.g. TB, viral infections); and many households lack basic sanitation. To begin reversing these trends MJH created the Mother and Child Safety Program.
The Mother and Child Safety Program is built around the hospital’s existing programs to provide a more holistic approach to primary health care. In Barangay 123, The Mother and Child Safety Program includes a milk feeding program, a Hepatitis-B immunization program, free consultations, health classes for mothers, and more. Half of the awarded funds grant will ensure MJH can continue providing the Mother and Child Safety Program free of charge, or at a greatly reduced price.
The other half of the awarded funds will allow MJH to purchase a digital X-Ray machine. Currently, MJH has just one portable X-ray machine. After years of wear and tear, this machine has slowed down and is now beyond repair.
“We would like to thank you all for making our wish come true. You can be rest assured that your financial help will truly benefit our indigent patients improve their health conditions.”
– Mr. Arceo, Executive Director of Mary Johnston Hospital
